Our sweaters are made to be worn, lived in and loved— They’re hand-knit from natural fibers, which means they actually ask for less washing, not more. Caring for your sweater doesn’t need to feel fussy or fragile. A few thoughtful habits will help it age beautifully and stay with you for many seasons ahead.

Here’s our simple, gentle guide to caring for your Made by Minga sweater or knitwear:

1. Wash Less Than You Think

Wool and Alpaca is naturally magical— its fibers absorb moisture and resist odor, meaning it doesn’t need frequent washing. Skip the weekly wash cycle and save that for your everyday basics. We highly recommend if you do choose to wash your handknit sweater, to handwash or dryclean wash only. We hardly wash our sweaters, and if only about once a year, and they’re better for it.

2. Refresh Between Wears

When your sweater needs a little pick-me-up, airing it out often does the trick. For an extra refresh, turn it inside out and lightly mist with a garment refresher. Let it breathe overnight and you’re good to go.

3. Spot Clean with Care

Small spills happen— no need to wash the whole sweater. Spot cleaning is your best friend. For light stains, apply a gentle garment spray, let it sit, then lift the stain with a cool, damp cloth. Slow and gentle wins here.

4. Choose a Gentle Soap

If and when you do wash, always use a wool-safe or delicate detergent. Regular laundry soaps can be harsh on natural fibers and lead to shrinking or felting. A mild, all-purpose soap made for delicates will keep your sweater happy and intact.

5. Never Hang When Wet

Wet natural fibers is heavy. Hanging can stretch your sweater out of shape. Instead, gently press out excess water (no twisting!), reshape, and lay flat on a towel to dry.

6. Embrace (and Tame) Pilling

Pilling is completely normal— it’s simply a sign your sweater is being loved and worn. Use a sweater comb now and then to gently remove pills and keep the surface smooth.

7. Store with Intention

Before storing your sweater for the season, make sure it’s clean— moths love lingering dirt on natural fibers. Fold and store in a breathable cotton bag in a cool, dry place. Skip plastic bins. Add cedar, or natural scents like lavender, rosemary, mint, or eucalyptus to keep insects away.

Caring for your sweater is just another way of honoring the hands that made it — and the moments you’ll wear it through.
